The Basque language, Euskera, is the official language of Spain's País Vasco autonomous province, and an unofficial language of the Basque region of France. Outlawed during the Spanish dictatorship, Spain's minority languages, especially Basque and Catalan, have become part of a resurgence of cultural and community pride. The .EUS new generic top-level domain (new Domain Extension) will expand and represent the Basque region online.
Although very few people today are monolingual Basque-speakers, there are an increasing number of people learning the language as children and as adults, and a global recognition of the importance of preserving the language as part of Spain's complex cultural heritage.
The Basque Economy
The País Vasco currently has the lowest rate of unemployment in Spain. Its economy is diverse, and although its shipbuilding industry has seen better days, manufacturing has remained relevant, with Gamesa building wind turbines and ITP specializing in aeronautics. With its easy access to the sea, the region has long had a thriving fishery, but tourism – especially since the construction of the Guggenheim Bilbao – has become a major draw as well.
