FAQ: About .UK Domain Reservation Rights

If you registered a domain ending with .CO.UK, .ORG.UK, .ME.UK, .NET.UK, .PLC.UK OR .LTD.UK June 10th, 2014 and, and if this registration has remained registered to you since that date, the .UK registry Nominet may have reserved your name under the shorter .UK domain extension for you to register for free until June 10th, 2019.

You can check if you have rights to a .UK domain by querying your existing domain name at www.theukdomain.uk/advice/do-i-have-uk-rights/.

These reserved .UK domain names cannot be ordered through our standard order process, but you can register a .UK domain name Nominet is reserving for you by contacting us with your order request.

What to include in your order request

You will need to provide your existing domain's Whois details if they are not visible in the public Whois at www.nominet.uk/whois/.

(Note: If you've opted out of showing your domain's Whois details in the public Whois, you can find these details in your Nominet account at https://secure.nominet.org.uk/auth/login.html. If you have never logged in to your Nominet account, you can create login credentials before logging in.)

Your provided Whois details must be a 1:1 match with the existing domain's Whois record, so please copy your domain's Whois record's spelling, punctuation, and capitalization exactly.

Please also submit one of the following forms of documentation to validate your identity as the existing domain owner:

For individuals:

  • A copy of your drivers’ license or government-issued national ID card that shows your place of residence
  • A copy of a utility bill, dated within the past 3 months

For companies:

  • Certificate of registration from commercial register or Companies House
  • Official company letterhead
  • A copy of a utility bill, dated within the past 3 months

We will then attempt to register the .UK domain name on your behalf. You will receive a followup notification afterward.

Please note that while your reserved .UK domain name is free to register for the first year, you will be responsible for paying the domain name's renewal fee if you decide to extend its registration beyond the first year. You can find prices for all domain extensions on our price list.
